“I was born a poor, black child . . .”
– Steve Martin
I retired by accident. I didn’t plan it. It just sort of happened. So, now I have a boat that I’m refitting to suite me and my way of life. If all goes well for the next two months I’ll be in the UK doing the final preparations and testing. Then, out to sea! I’ll stop at the Azores for the first leg and to replenish whatever supplies I used and to perform repairs and last-minute projects. Then – Richmond, Va. and Boston Ma. before heading up the St. Lawrence River to Lake Michigan. for the summer.
I am Hoosier born and reared.. Graduated from Kokomo High School, went to Purdue for a time, moved to Seattle with the hopes of being a forester, joined the Navy, got married and had some children, moved around, started some businesses, had a ranch and orchard, was a computer guy, quit all that, went to university and became a science teacher, and now I am doing this. What a crooked path my life has taken.
I’ve won government grants for inventions, taught college and high school, built a concrete dome, remodeled houses, dug ditches, roofed houses, wormed horses, done whitewater, competed in national unicycling, had an unofficial world record, went to Yellowstone to fly fish, driven coast-to-coast, bike toured in Idaho and Montana, sailed from Key West to the Marquesas on a Hobie Cat, … I’ve done some stupid things that could have killed me, got hurt a few times, and had a lot of fun along the way.
What’s next? Sailing across the ocean on a tiny boat!!! Follow my adventures.
